How to Extend Your Working Holiday to 3 Years
Your initial Working Holiday Visa is valid for 12 months. But you can extend for a second and even a third year if you complete specified work in regional or remote Australia.
Second year extension requirements:
- Complete 88 days of specified work in a designated regional area during your first WHV year
- Specified work includes farm work, fruit picking, fishing, mining, construction in regional areas
- Evidence required: payslips, employer declaration, tax records
Third year extension requirements:
- Complete 179 days of specified work in northern or remote Australia during your second WHV year
- Additional qualifying work categories may apply for the third year
Career Launchers reviews your work records and ensures your extension application is supported by the correct documentation. Many WHV holders lose their extension because of incorrect employer declarations. We prevent that.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I apply for a WHV if I am already in Australia?
In most cases, the first Working Holiday Visa must be applied for while you are outside Australia. If you are already in Australia on a valid visa, we can advise on your specific options.
Can I get a second WHV if I did not complete 88 days in my first year?
No. The 88 days of specified regional work must be completed during your first WHV year to be eligible for a second year. There is no waiver or alternative route.
What counts as regional work for the 88-day requirement?
Qualifying work must be in a specified occupation and in a designated regional postcode area. Eligible occupations include farm work, fruit and vegetable picking, plant and animal cultivation, fishing and pearling, tree farming and felling, mining, and certain construction work.
Can I use the Working Holiday Visa as a pathway to permanent residency?
Not directly. The WHV is a temporary visa with no direct PR pathway. However, many WHV holders use their Australian work experience and connections to eventually qualify for skilled migration, employer sponsorship, or partner visas.
Is there an age limit for the Working Holiday Visa?
Yes. For most nationalities, you must be 18 to 30 years old at the time of application. For passport holders from Canada, France, Ireland, and a few other countries, the upper age limit has been extended to 35.
