Which Partner Visa Do You Need?
Every relationship is unique so is your visa pathway. We help you choose the partner visa that best fits your situation, whether you’re married, engaged, or in a de facto relationship.
Subclass 309 Offshore and 100 Permanent
For applicants who are outside Australia at the time of application. The 309 is a temporary visa granted first. It automatically transitions to the permanent Subclass 100 visa after the relationship is re-assessed approximately 2 years later.
Subclass 820 Onshore and 801 Permanent
For applicants who are already in Australia on a valid visa. The 820 is a temporary visa that allows you to remain in Australia while waiting for the permanent 801 to be granted
Subclass 300 Prospective Marriage Visa
For couples who are engaged but not yet married, where the applicant is outside Australia. Must marry within 9 months of arrival. After marriage, applicant can apply for an onshore Partner Visa.
TIMELINE
How Long Does a Partner Visa Take?
Partner visas are among the longest processing visas in the Australian immigration system. The temporary visa stage (309 or 820) can take 12 to 24 months. The permanent visa stage (100 or 801) typically follows 2 years after the temporary visa was granted.
During the temporary visa stage, you can live, work, and study in Australia with full work rights. Career Launchers prepares your file with the long game in mind, making sure the permanent stage is as smooth as the temporary stage.
EVIDENCE FRAMEWORK
Four Categories of Relationship Evidence
The Department of Home Affairs assesses partner visa applications across four distinct categories. A strong application presents compelling material in all four. A weak application in any single category creates doubt that can delay or refuse the entire application.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Frequently Asked Questions
Do we need to be married or is de facto sufficient?
Both married and de facto relationships are eligible. De facto relationships must have existed for at least 12 months at the time of application, unless there are compelling and compassionate reasons or you are registered under a state or territory relationship register.
Can I work in Australia while my partner visa is being processed?
If you apply for the onshore Subclass 820, you can generally be granted a bridging visa that allows you to remain in Australia and work while your application is assessed. Career Launchers confirms your bridging visa conditions at the time of lodgement.
Can same-sex couples apply for a partner visa?
Absolutely. Australian partner visas are available to all couples regardless of gender or sexual orientation. The same eligibility criteria, evidence requirements, and processing pathways apply equally.
What if my relationship breaks down during processing?
Can I include my children in the partner visa application?
Yes. Dependent children can be included as secondary applicants in your partner visa application. Career Launchers advises on which children are eligible and what additional documentation is required for minors.
What is the difference between the offshore and onshore pathway?
The offshore pathway (309 and 100) is for applicants outside Australia at the time of lodgement. The onshore pathway (820 and 801) is for applicants already in Australia on a valid visa. The processing timelines are similar but the bridging visa conditions differ. Career Launchers advises on which pathway is correct for your situation.
