WHY IT MATTERS

Beyond the 5 Points | What the Professional Year Actually Gives You

Real Australian Work Experience

The internship component places you with an actual Australian employer in your field. This is the most common missing element in skilled migration applications from overseas-educated graduates.

Additional Migration Points

These points are added to your SkillSelect EOI score and can make the critical difference between receiving an invitation and waiting indefinitely in a competitive invitation round.

Australian Workplace Communication Skills

The formal coursework component specifically addresses the differences between overseas professional culture and Australian workplace norms. No amount of overseas experience can replicate this.

Professional
Network

Many PYP participants receive job offers from their internship host company or through connections made during the program. Your professional network in Australia is a genuine asset.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

You must hold a visa that grants you the right to study and work in Australia for the duration of the program. Most PYP participants are on a Temporary Graduate Visa Subclass 485. Some graduate stream student visa holders may also be eligible depending on their remaining visa validity.

The coursework component of the PYP is intensive. Many providers offer part-time study options that can be combined with part-time work, but full-time employment alongside full-time PYP study is difficult. Career Launchers advises on program scheduling options that work for your circumstances.

This varies by provider and placement. Some internship placements are paid, others are not. Career Launchers advises on what to expect from the providers in our network and what your rights are as an intern under Australian law.

The 5 Professional Year points apply to your EOI for 4 years from the date you completed the program. After 4 years, the points are no longer claimable.

The internship placement is a mandatory requirement of the PYP. Failure to complete it means you cannot receive the Professional Year points. Career Launchers works with program providers who have strong industry networks and high internship placement rates to minimise this risk.
