COMMON QUESTIONS
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a 482 visa sponsorship take to process?
Standard Business Sponsor approval takes approximately 3 to 6 months. The occupation nomination and visa application are typically processed concurrently. Total processing from SBS application to visa grant can range from 4 to 12 months depending on the occupation and applicant country.
Can the employee's family come to Australia on a 482 visa?
Yes. The sponsored worker’s spouse, de facto partner, and dependent children can be included as secondary applicants. Family members receive their own visa and are generally granted full work and study rights.
Can a 482 visa lead to permanent residency?
Yes, through the Medium-Term Stream. After working for the same employer in the same occupation for 3 years on a 482 visa, the sponsored worker becomes eligible to apply for a permanent Subclass 186 visa via the Temporary Residence Transition stream.
Can I change employers on a 482 visa?
You can change employers, but your new employer must also become an approved sponsor and nominate you in the same occupation. You cannot start working for a new employer before the new sponsorship is approved.
What are the employer's ongoing obligations after the visa is granted?
Sponsors have significant ongoing obligations including ensuring the sponsored worker is paid the nominated salary, not recovering sponsorship costs from the worker, maintaining records, and notifying the Department of any changes to employment.
