Which 482 Stream Applies to You?

Short-Term Stream

For occupations on the Short-Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL). Visa duration of up to 2 years (or 4 years for Australian Free Trade Agreement countries). Cannot currently lead directly to permanent residency.

Medium-Term Stream

For occupations on the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). Visa duration of up to 4 years. Can transition to permanent residency via the Subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme after 3 years.

Labour Agreement Stream

For employers who have a formal Labour Agreement with the Australian government. Applicable to industries with highly specific workforce needs not met by the standard occupation lists.

Relevant Skills and Qualifications

Your qualifications and work experience must be relevant to the nominated occupation. In some cases a skills assessment may be required by the relevant assessing body.

English Language Proficiency

Most 482 visa applicants must demonstrate functional English. Accepted tests include IELTS, PTE, TOEFL, Cambridge, and OET.

Yes, through the Medium-Term Stream. After working for the same employer in the same occupation for 3 years on a 482 visa, the sponsored worker becomes eligible to apply for a permanent Subclass 186 visa via the Temporary Residence Transition stream.

You can change employers, but your new employer must also become an approved sponsor and nominate you in the same occupation. You cannot start working for a new employer before the new sponsorship is approved.

Sponsors have significant ongoing obligations including ensuring the sponsored worker is paid the nominated salary, not recovering sponsorship costs from the worker, maintaining records, and notifying the Department of any changes to employment.
